Trump’s pick of Matt Gaetz for attorney general shocks and repulses Republicans.

Matt Gaetz, who was already involved in a sex trafficking case, was previously linked to his roommate’s untimely death at Florida State University, which was later deemed a suicide. Now that he has been nominated for attorney general, the rumours have resurfaced on social media. Republican leaders are sceptical that Gaetz will be confirmed by the Senate, as he needs a majority vote to obtain the seat.

Donald Trump has declared his intention to nominate Matt Gaetz, a very conservative congressman from Florida, to the office of attorney general, a decision that may exacerbate divisions within the House Republican ranks.

He’s faced legal challenges of his own.

The House Ethics Committee had been investigating Matt Gaetz over accusations that he played a role in a scheme involving the sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl. The probe came to an end on Wednesday when Gaetz resigned from his position. In June, the committee released a rare public update, which mentioned concerns about possible sexual misconduct, drug abuse, accepting illegal gifts, and efforts to impede investigations into his conduct.

The House Ethics Committee also dropped four additional complaints against Gaetz, including claims that he conveyed improper photographs or videos to colleagues on the House floor, accepted bribes, or misused campaign funds for personal benefit.

Gaetz has categorically disputed these allegations, claiming that they were organised by his political rival, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. It is worth mentioning that the probe began before McCarthy and the Republicans gained control of the House. In 2023, the Justice Department closed its sex trafficking investigation into Gaetz without charging him.
