The university in Marawi, which was overrun by militants supporting the Islamic State in 2017, announced that it was postponing classes indefinitely.
The Philippine military announced on Saturday that, during a military operation the previous day in the province of Maguindanao del Sur, they had killed 11 militants, including members of the pro-Islamic State organization Dawlah Islamiyah-Philippines.
The violence that occurred during a religious assembly has left Mindanao State University “deeply saddened and appalled,” the school said in a Facebook statement. “We vehemently condemn this senseless and horrifying act,” the statement read.
