This Mpox case comes from the more aggressive Clade I strain.
A case of Clade 1 Mpox, which is considered more serious, has been confirmed in California. The CDC revealed this on Saturday but emphasised that the danger to the general population is still very low.
After travelling from Eastern Africa, where there is a Clade 1 Mpox outbreak, the patient was treated at a local medical centre in the United States before being released. According to the CDC, the patient is feeling better after isolating himself at home. Local and state health officials are working together to locate everybody who may have come into touch with the patient.
What is Mpox?
Mpox is an illness caused by a virus that is in the same family as smallpox. The virus can spread through bites from rodents or small animals that are carrying the infection.
In some regions of Africa, Mpox is now considered an endemic disease. Typical symptoms are fever, chills, and body aches. In severe instances, lesions can appear on the face, hands, chest, and genital area.
The first report of the clade I variation occurred this year. It spreads by intimate contact, such as sex. Several instances were confirmed in Eastern and Central Africa, with some also found in travellers from beyond the region.
The disease spreads mostly through sexual transmission and close contact, with pregnant women, children, and vulnerable populations being at greatest danger.
The majority of the cases have originated in Burundi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the WHO, more than 3,100 cases have been reported since September 30th.
There have been reports of cases from Germany, India, Kenya, Sweden, Thailand, Zimbabwe, and the United Kingdom.
According to health officials, the situation in Congo is improving, but the country still needs at least 3 million immunisations.
