India captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and the selection panel met recently to discuss a range of topics related to Indian cricket.
The meeting covered India’s defeat by Australia in the World Cup 2023 final. During the meeting, the Test, ODI, and T20I squads for the South Africa tour were also selected.
Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, and Treasurer Ashish Shelar were among the board members present during the meeting on Thursday, November 30, in New Delhi.
According to a report published by Dainik Jagran, Rohit Sharma explicitly asked the selectors whether they wanted him to be the captain for the major event the following year during their lengthy discussion with Dravid and Sharma. Rohit joined the meeting in New Delhi via video call. According to a BCCI official who was present during the meeting, Rohit told the Hindi daily, “If you want to select me for the T20 World Cup, then tell me now how to go about it.”
The selectors, coach Dravid, and board officials all concurred, according to the article, that Rohit is the best person to captain the squad in the T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the USA and the West Indies.
According to the source, although Rohit, the seasoned opener, requested a vacation from the entire white-ball leg, the selectors still wanted him to command the T20I side during the next trip to South Africa.
The selectors fulfilled Rohit Sharma’s demand, as Suryakumar Yadav was selected captain for the three-match T20I series that begins on December 10. However, KL Rahul was named captain for the India versus South Africa ODI series.
